Dr. Anthony Fauci struggled to hide his dismay when Donald Trump attempted to make a joke during a coronavirus conference.
After lashing out a White House correspondent for NBC, the POTUS called the State Department the “Deep State Department.” The president was obviously trying to make a joke, but he was the only one who laughed at what he said.
Standing behind him at that time is Dr. Fauci, who stifled a giggle before face-palming himself. Shortly after, Dr. Fauci’s facepalm became trending on Twitter. Netizens claimed that the physician’s reaction represents exactly what they are feeling whenever they hear the president talking about coronavirus.
“Dr. Fauci’s reaction to Trump tells you all you need to know,” Twitter user @NightlyPolitics said.
“Fauci’s facepalm while listening to Trump spew his BS, will go down in history as one act that can describe Trump’s entire response to this pandemic,” Twitter user @LibsInAmerica said.
“When Dr. Fauci breaks the taboo of touching the face to facepalm, you know it’s bad, Twitter user @Eurydice_KRG said.
“Who wants to bet that Fauci won’t be in the coronavirus press briefing anymore after the facepalm seen around the world?” Twitter user @kaoconnor said.
Meanwhile, earlier during the press conference, Fauci and Trump got into a heated exchange. The POTUS kept suggesting that chloroquine, a drug that treats malaria, can also help treat coronavirus.
However, Fauci stressed that there has not been any proof that chloroquine could put an end to the deadly pandemic.
“The evidence you are talking about is anecdotal evidence. The information you are referring to is anecdotal, so you can’t make a definitive statement about it,” he said.
But despite his efforts to convince Trump that what he’s saying is wrong, the POTUS still didn’t budge.
“We’ll see what happens. I have seen things that are impressive. We’ll see. We’ll know soon,” Trump said.
