The British opposition Labour Party has pledged to improve the country’s healthcare sector, such as improving ambulance response times and shortening waiting lists for those who need emergency care. This comes as the party leads over the governing Conservative Party in public polls.
Labour leader Keir Starmer said on Monday that his party would seek to improve ambulance response times and shorten waiting lists for those who need urgent care should they become the governing party following the 2024 elections. Starmer said the governing party has neglected the country’s National Health Service and that Labour would look to increase staff training which would be funded by the non-domiciling tax status to cut down waiting times.
“I want an NHS back on its feet – of course I do. But I also want an NHS that’s fit for the future,” Starmer said in his speech. “We’ll leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding new ways to cut waiting lists.”
Starmer also said that Labour would make sure that ambulances arrive in seven minutes for cardiac arrests and would aim for waiting times of no more than four hours in A & E. Starmer said that patients would also be allowed to visit the nearest hospitals if faster treatment may be available compared to the local hospital.
Starmer also said that Labour would seek reforms on how people can get appointments with their local doctors and provide a fair pay agreement to help recruit and retain more care providers.
As part of efforts to focus on health, Starmer said Labour would change rules so that advertisements of vaping, sugary snacks, and junk food would not be marketed to children.
Meanwhile, a union representing junior doctors in the United Kingdom said its members voted to take more strike action in June, putting further strain on the NHS amidst the long-running dispute over pay and working conditions. The British Medical Association said in a statement that around 45,000 of its junior doctors would take strike action from June 13 to June 17 and warning of more strikes in the summer unless the government changes its stance.
