Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was among the lawmakers being targeted by the pro-Trump mob during the January 6 Capitol insurrection. According to Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, following the insurrection, the rioters that stormed Pelosi’s office called to ask for a lost and found for things they may have left behind.
Speaking with Business Insider Friday last week, Raskin revealed that the day after the Capitol insurrection, Pelosi’s office began receiving calls from the insurrectionists who broke into her office asking if there was a lost and found. The police officers took down the information from the insurrectionists who called Pelosi’s office. The House Speaker’s office was broken into during the riots, while Pelosi’s staff hid in a conference room that was barricaded by filing cabinets.
“The officers quickly got on the phone and said, yeah, just give us your name, your address, your social, you know, and we’ll tie up those loose ends,” said Raskin. “But what’s so fascinating to me about that there really were people who felt as if they had been summoned to Washington by the president.”
Raskin also explained that the phone calls also indicated how now-former President Donald Trump was a central figure to the thousands who were in Washington on January 6, 2021, and ultimately broke into the Capitol. Raskin, who also serves on the congressional committee probing the insurrection, also noted that the incident also poses a challenge to the panel.
“And when they were told that they were trespassing and invading the Capitol, they said the president invited them to be there,” said the Democratic lawmaker. “They didn’t have any kind of subtle understanding of the separation of powers. They just thought the number one person in the US government had invited them to be there, and therefore they had a right.”
Previously, a woman who was seen holding a broken sign from Pelosi’s office during the insurrection is now accused of causing a car accident last week that left one dead and another person injured. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a woman named Emily Hernandez now faces two charges related to driving while under the influence and causing a crash that resulted in death and severe injury.
Hernandez was also accused of having excessive blood alcohol content.
